First Day Hike
Eighth Annual First Day Hike at SML State Park
Date: January 1, 2018
Time: 1:00 p.m.
January 1st is a free park entrance day at SML State Park. Interpreter Jet Lawler is encouraging everyone to start the year off right as you walk off a few of those holiday calories. She said at 1:00 p.m. she will meet visitors at the Visitor Center where you can hike on your own or accompany her along Beechwood Trail. She said the trail weaves through the woods near the campground. You will pass a home and tobacco barn that dates to an earlier time. The path follows a small stream and has lake views. The approximate 1-mile trail is rated easy. You can also enjoy winter views of Walton Creek, then follow the Whitetail Path connector trail to Striper Cove Trail. Here you’ll pass through a newly created wildlife opening and see signs of early forest succession, she said. This hike is approximately 1.5 miles and is rated as moderate.
Lawler said this is a sun or snow event, so dress appropriately and wear proper footwear. Bring your hiking staff, binoculars, and/or cameras. Well-behaved dogs are welcome and must be leashed at all times. After the hike Lawler, along with the Friends, will serve hot chocolate and treats at the Discovery Center. For more information, call the park, 540-297-6066.
